|
|
A few times recently my TomTom has thought that I was 50 or more yards away from where I really was.
If she thinks I am in the middle of the river she panics, and if she thinks I am in a side street away from the main road I am really on, she calculates a complicated route to get me back on course.
It happened over quite a long period yesterday. I was on a road I know fairly well (North Circular), but I was going to a destination I didn't know and hadn't looked up first.
I started to panic as well and actually turned the VW Satnav system back on (that's how serious the situation was).
Did I do something wrong or is it a TomTom bug? She said that she could see her full complement of satellites.
I would be grateful for your advice.

Probably a duff Quick GPS fix file on the device if you have had it connected to TomTom Home and the internet recently as there have been quite a number of posts about this issue recently in North America, and I think the same applies to Europe. Try connecting it to Home again and let it download whatever files it needs and see if the problem goes away.
If you use the device every few days then consider stopping using the qGPS service as it offers no advantage at all when you use the device on a regular basis, and if the data is wrong it will screw up your device in the way you describe - Mike |

Another thankyou, Mike.
I have been connecting the TomTom to Home, but only to download the cameras etc. onto it.
I have now updated all the files Home wanted to update and we will see what happens.
If I do decide to stop using qGPS, how do I do that?

As thats been answered all I can add is that I stopped using the qGPS on my devices some considerable time back and certainly don't miss it, to me qGPS offers nothing but it does introduce a risk that your kit won't work correctly due to poor data that you have no control over - Mike |

Sorry, I haven't understood what I have to do yet.
QGPS is an option to download from the TomTom itself and not in Home. If I manage to stop downloads, do I have to delete some residual file or another on the TomTom or will it just go out of date?
Sorry if I am being thick.

The QuickGPS data will quickly expire. Your TomTom downloads updated ephemeris and almanac tables from the satellites directly. QuickGPS seeks to speed up this process but is largely superfluous for most users and in some cases, as you have found, makes matters worse!
This is a good basic primer on GPS. _________________ Darren Griffin |
