Is there a way to make old maps work with TOMTOM 3? There must be a way as the file format is very similar!
Any ideas? |

Hi Res,
TomTom website Support Pages wrote: | The maps of TomTom Navigator 3 have been improved. TomTom Navigator 3 cannot read TomTom Navigator 2 maps, TomTom Navigator 2 cannot read TomTom Navigator 3 maps. |
I would image that you’d have to do some serious hacking to allow TTNav3 to use TTNav2 maps, which is a major no-no!
Out of interest, why would you want or need to use the older maps?

I went out to buy tom tom 3 and have the maps of western europe. Im off to italy in a couple of weeks by which time the upgrade route for said maps wont be here and hence wish to use my italy tom tom 2 map with tom tom 3 for the visit. |

Hi Res,
I suppose that you could try asking TomTom when the European TTNav3 maps will be available and ask them to send you a copy. However their support staff will probably be swamped with many requests due to all of the new products that TomTom has just released.
Alternatively, can you downgrade back to TTNav2 and reinstall all of the required European maps?
BTW, looking at some of the threads about TTNav3, is it worth upgrading to TTNav3 for the new map data?

European maps will be available real soon! Retailers have been informed, it's just the matter of shipping now. Price is the same as European maps under v2. |

Is anyone aware if the 2 apps can coexist on the same ipaq?
Privateer - TT 3 is essentially just a map update which can only be a good thing. Although they are not THAT up to date! Why an earth they didnt develop some form of live update facility for maps in this version is beyond me. After all it would resolve EVERY customers qualms with this product and save them a shed load of cash in shipping map updates (if they ever do). Get with it tomtom the year is 2004!
Saying that if this traffic thing comes off then it is VERY worthwile update but I cant help thinking that the traffic app will also work with TT2. Same as i think there must be a way to get TT2 maps working on TT3 as the file format is almost identical.

[/cynical] I thought that TomTom has just re-used the TT2 maps in TT3 but changed the format to prevent TT3 from using the old maps.[/cynical] |

I have heard there are ways to do this - it makes use of the TT2 navigator exe but of course it aint supported nor an official way and I havent tried it.
Board admins - can I post the method to get this to work? |

Maybe you can send it to us first and then we can decide if it's ok to post. I wouldn't mind putting a sting into their side...
From a business perspective you have to be clear though that it is not in the interest of the vendor to provide interoperability. Never... _________________ Lutz

OK although this wont let the tt2 maps work with tt3 it at least allows you to run tt2 on a ppc that has tt3 installed.
1. Copy the TT2 map folder onto your CF/SD card
2. Copy the TT2 Navigator EXE file into this folder
3. Copy the TT$LANG$.DLL file from TT3 folder \ProgramFiles\Navigator
4. Make a shortcut to the EXE file in step 2
5. Run the EXE file
As I said before I have not tried this and was only told by a neighbour the other day. Hope this helps some people

Look in Usenet on a binaries Pocket PC GPS group (there's only one) and you will see many ideas on things that can be done.
However anything like this will be outside your licence agreement. If you want to use the shortly available traffic addon, a valid licence and registration for the country you are in will be required as you have to identify yourself before the traffic information is downloaded. |

That fix (if it works) is only to allow you to run both TTN2 and TTN3 on the same machine (and with the maps bought with the relevant TTN)
Therefore it's difficult to see why this would be against the licence as the maps and programs are bought and paid for and only work with their corresponding maps.
If you were upgrading then this would be an issue. _________________ Nick |
