Because my Dell PDA keeps switching itself off (it erroneously claims the battery latch has been opened) I've sourced a One XL (previous generation with SD slot) to tide me over. I've loaded the PGSPW speedcams and Andy's spoken warning to replicate my Dell setup. I also want to continue using Liz Whittaker's spoken directions (these came from Ray Flanagan's sadly defunct site) but copying the datann chk & vif files I have to the One's voices folder does not result in Liz becoming a voice options as it did on the Dell where she showed up with "unknown" in place of a name but was selectable just like any named voice.
I've tried searching the forums but either get an excessive quantity of results or nothing.
Any help appreciated. I've updated the One XL to app. version 8.010, Western Europe map 815.2024. Thanks _________________ Nexus 7 (2013) & Nexus 4/Sygic/CamerAlert

They should work and I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't, are they in the same folder as the existing voice files? Perhaps a soft-reset? _________________ Darren Griffin |

The Liz Whit navigation voice will work on any TT device PDA or PNA, the file set comprises of three files:
data87.chk
data87.vif
data87.bmp
Assuming all three of these files are in your voices folder the device should pick them up, if it asks about "Only show voices in the same langauge" answer NO to force the device to list every possible voice, it is possible the custom voice doesn't have a country tagged to it so choosing "English" it might not make the voice available for selection - Mike |

Thanks, Gents.
Spot on Mike Alder. Accepting voices for all languages did the trick!
I already had the .chk & .vif files in the same folder as the TomTom voices. I've never bothered with the .bmp files, largely because not all the voices I got from Ray Flanagan's site had an associated .bmp file and there are no .bmp files in the voices folder for the TomTom voices.
Thanks again,

Not neccessarily "87"....
Here's a link I had bookmarked for an alternative home of the Liz and Andy voices from Ray's site (no Vicky there unfortunately)
On there, Liz is "85", and the one I have saved on my PC, she is "75"
But so long as all three files match, the number is right in the .vif file (it's plain text, so easy to check) and they don't clash with any other voice's number on YOUR system, all should be OK. |

Thanks, Andy_P, the Liz voice I have is also 75.
The link you mentioned seems to have gone AWOL! _________________ Nexus 7 (2013) & Nexus 4/Sygic/CamerAlert

Ooops!
Here it is:

Edit: Hang on, this is a bit weird....
My bookmark was to:

Follow the link in the first post and you get to a DIFFERENT page, (the one I was trying to give you) but it seems to have the same URL as the one above. It's probably something obvious, but I can't see what's different!
any way use the second link to get to the Liz and Andy voices.

I honestly thought Liz was in her 30s but I might be wrong
The TomTom supplied voices have the pictures embedded within a different file, any custom voices need the associated bmp file to display a picture when scrolling through the voice choices on the device, the voice will work without the bmp file but it does make it easy to locate a specific voice if you install a number of custom voice packs.
Its a shame Rays site has disappeared, I would like to see these custom voices available for download from this site if possible, although these days I guess TomTom Home is sharing the files without acknowledgement of where they originated from or any associated permission - Mike |

That's something we could consider. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Strangely enough, they don't seem to have made it onto the Home downloads.
Darren, when I was compiling the Speed cam voices, I managed to get in touch with Ray, and he basically said we could do what we liked with the voices, so I think hosting them here would be an excellent idea.
The (second) link above has Liz and Andy, just have to find Vicki from somewhere.
Can YOU see why my links go wrong?
Go to http://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/11.html
and in the first post is a link to ...../links/index.php
Follow that and you get to the page I want.
But if you then copy the URL of that page and paste it here (or straight int o a browser) it redirects to ...../voices/index.php which is a different page. |

I have all the voices from Rays site (even though the numbers might be wrong) - I have sent them to Darren for consideration for download including the silent one - still needed for users with the PDA units.
I still think for the PDA applications and to some extent the PNA devices, that when they are set up using the same voice for navigation and speed camera warnings the whole package sounds far more professional - Mike |

I 'd not thought of it like that. I chose Liz for directions and Andy for SCam warnings so that in high concentration situations when I cannot give much, if any, attention to the SatNav. I at least know from the voice whether a route instruction or camera warning is being given. _________________ Nexus 7 (2013) & Nexus 4/Sygic/CamerAlert

On modern airliners, where they have lots of voice alerts for things, don't they do the same thing and have a different voice for the REALLY important ones? |

I have had Tim giving me directions and Kate giving me the camera warnings for sometime and it all sounded quite professional. However, I have been fiddling around (as one does) with my device and have upset my setup. I can now get Tim giving instructions and a ‘Boing’ for the warnings, or Kate doing both but I’m damned if I can remember how I once managed how to get both voices working together. I could always restore from a backup but thats not the point.
Please tell me how.… Grr! I’m going bonkers here. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

NORMALLY, you can have a normal voice doing the navigation and a TTS voice doing the warnings, but on one or two software versions that option has got lost.
You should just be able to select a "normal" voice such as Tim and then the next screen should be:
Like this:
... after which it will let you keep your choice for navigation, but select a TTS voice (such as Kate) for messages and warnings.
Then you can type in the warning speech you want in the normal POI "Warn when near" setup pages.
Unfortunately, all you get on other software is:
...which just lets you choose the same TTS voice for everything.
If you are unlucky and have the second situation, another way of doing it would be to have ogg audio files which are recordings of the Kate voice reading the alerts, but as far as I know, the only ones available from this site are km/h "euro" warnings. |
