Posted: Mon Jun 26, 2006 11:47 pm Post subject: How do I backup my Mio P350? |
|
|
I've just bought a Mio P350.
I've hooked it up to my PC with ActiveSynch.
But... I don't have any option to back it up??
I've got other Pocket PC's.
When these are connected... I always have the option to backup.
What am I doing wrong?
(Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask... the PocketGPSWorld forums are sooo huge that it's somethimes impossible to find a group to post to!)
Thanks.

One way is to go to Programs - eBackup and it will be saved on your SD Card. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

eBackup...?
Is that a seperate program you have to buy or something?
ALSO... if I backup the contents of an SD card... is that a 'full' backup...?
Could I transfer to another card and use that card as the original?
AND... I still don't understand why the backup/restore option is not available in ActiveSynch?
Thanks. |

eBackup comes with Windows.
Tap on Start then Programs and look for eBackup (it may be shown as Backup - Restore). Tap on eBackup and backup to your SD Card.
You get a choice of what you want to back up, I choose all.
If ever your battery goes flat, all you have to do is plug in your adapter car/home then Start - Programs - eBackup - Restore. (If eBackup isn't shown you will see backup - restore).
No real need to copy to another SD Card although it would be worth coping the SD Card to your hard drive just incase a fault develop s on your SD Card. Unusual but it can happen. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

That's on your P350 of course, sorry I never made myself clear. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

I got a p550, Use active sync,
1)go to explore
2)go to storage card
3)Highlight all
4)Copy and Paste into a folder you have made on your desk top.
That should do it.....Worked for me.
I agree that I had the backup option on my older version of active synch.
Seems they are now moving backwards

I also have the MIO P350 and want to completely backup everything before I start adding and changing stuff.
Also amazed that activesync no longer has a backup facility! and I don't appear to have ebackup on the pda itself (Windows Mobile Version 5, OS 5.1.195 (Build 14929.2.2.1)).
As suggested by cyberpete I have copied and pasted all the files onto my desktop PC but am wondering if this is sufficient. i.e. if something goes wrong can I just replace all the files back to restore all files/settings etc. to the original?
OR Is there any free software I can download to do a backup?
Appologies if this is rather basic (this is my first GPS system and am learning the ropes) Thanks in advance for any help! |

On your Desktop, make sure you have Show hidden files and folders ticked in Tools - Folder Options - View. Drag copy and paste all files into a folder on your Hard Drive named something like SD Card backup. Inside your map folders there will be .cfg files, which hold favourites etc, one for each map. Don't foget to back it up again if you've added/updated anything e.g. Safety Cameras.
The chance of something going wrong with your SD Card is rare and so far I haven't needed to use my backup.
It's more likely that you will one day find you're battery has gone flat. There is a way to get going again.
Open the backup of your SD Card on your Desktop and add a new folder, I've named mine New Folder (original eh?).
If you never saved a copy of TTN5.21 update, download and save it now before going any further.
Now look for the TTN.CAB in the saved navupd521 update folder, it's in the Pocket PC folder, and copy and paste to the New Folder. On your CD's look for GPS.CAB, PIMAddIn.CAB, and a voice .cab. e.g Jane is engf.cab. Copy and paste these files into the New Folder.
Now right click on one, choose properties and tick the box to make it Read Only. Do this with each of the files. (If you don't do this the files will vanish into thin air after being used and you won't be able to use them again without going through the above proceedure).
You can now copy and paste the New Folder to your SD Card.
In the event of a battery failure, plug in car charger or mains adapter.
Switch on and go to Start - Programs - File Explorer.
Second line from the top, it will probably say My Documents, tap to the right of the Mobile icon and select Storage Card. Now tap on New Folder where you will see the cab files.
Tap on each cab file, one at a time, and install each one.
Everything will now be running as normal except you will have to re-setup your Speed Camera warnings/distances. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

What I would like to do is backup the PDA and the SD card.
backing up the SD card is easy and, as described above, all you need to do is connect PDA to desktop (laptop), open file explorer on desktop, select SD card, highlight all files on SD cards, copy files and then paste to your PDA backup directory on the desktop.
The problem is with the backing up of the PDA.
I assume that the easiest way is to use Ebackup to backup the PDA to the SD card on the PDA and then backup the SD card as described above.
Any comments? |

As a continuation of my post above.....
If the PDA fails it will be necessary to hard reset the PDA, (possibly) copy all the files to the SD card from the SD Card Backup Directory on the desktop and then restore the PDA from the SD card.
I assume that Ebackup also has a restore function? |

It did but later version of Windows mobile no longer have eBackup.
Sprite is evidently better than eBackup from what I've read.
If you have Music and Pics. etc on the SD Card, there is very little to worry about if you battery goes flat.
Doing it how I said above will get you back to normal except for having to se-set Camera warnings/distances. All your favourites are in a .cfg file in the map folders.
MikeAlder was the one who I learnt this from. When I first installed the .cab files, I did a hard re-set, went through the above proceedure and 'voila'. Done. You're up and running in a minute or so.
You'll have to reset time and date and personal details, as if new. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property
