Hello,

First, does anybody know if the charging point (socket) on the tomtom bluetooth gps receivers is the same as on the Globalsat bt-338?

The reason is, I have the bt-338 and also a tomtom car mount kit. I would be nice to be able to charge the gps from the socket on the mount. Tom tom sell a cable to do this but it is for their own bt receiver.

Second, the cable that came with my tom tom car kit to connect the mount to the lighter socket isn't long enough!! I have an MGF and the lighter socket is by the arm rest next to the hand brake.

So, does anybody know where to get a longer cable that will plug into the tomtom cradle? Preferably somewhere in the UK

Thanks for any help.

1) yes, the chargers are interchangeable

2) if it's a RJ11 connector then you can use a simple 4 wire phone cable to bridge the gap.

I tried that and blew my wired TomTom GPS up. Now I am not sure if the RJ11 extension cable caused the damage - but it was at the exact time that the fuse blew and destroyed components in the GPS receiver. So be careful, I was suspicious of reversals, but when I checked with a meter I couldn't see any..... Confused

You can buy the charging cables seperately from sellers advertised on this site. The latest one which came with my replacement wired TT GPS was much longer and not curly. I also have a MGTF and it is fine.

I don't think it is an RJ11. The cable that goes from lighter socket to tomtom cradle has the round plug. The RJ11 is the one that goes from the cradle to the BT receiver.

I've seen replacement charging cables advertised but they are the ones that go straight into the ipaq. I need a cable that goes into the tomtom car cradle. So it needs to have the round metal plug to go to the cradle on one end and the lighter plug on the other.

have you see those anywhere?

I got a replacement cable for cig lighter plug into TomTom car kit. It was from www.cpc.co.uk look for ones which go from the cig lighter and then have interchangeable plugs for the other end

Thanks Mark, I'll check that out.

Are the cables longer that the one supplied with the car kit though?

Yes, that was the problem I had. The one I got was 1.5metres straight, as opposed to coiled, cable, which allowed it to be mounted on the right of the dash then down under the mat under the pedals then emerge up to the cig lighter.

As I recall you could get them up to 5m tho.

There isn't anything special about the cable, it's fairly standard Smile

Thanks again.

I've checked that site out now and i see they also sell lighter socket extensions which could be another option. Then i could use the original lead that came with the tomtom car kit. Only problem with that is the bulky lighter socket on the extension may look cr*p!

I thought about that but discounted it for the same reason.
The stand alone cables are good but the only trouble is that the connector on the end isn't a very tight fit and any pull on the wire can cause it to break. I went through a couple of wires because it was connected to the car kit and down through the door rather tightly and the plug got pulled out of the socket and broken.

Now I have it wrapped around the top of the car kit and secured in place using one of the hand screws, that way it gets a little slack at the plug end and doesn't break if the cable gets tugged!
