|
|
I have just emailed TT Technical Support to ask if I was to purchase TTN3 now, would they offer a FREE upgrade to TTN5. This is there reply:
Quote: | I would wait for the Navigator 5 to be relased as there will not be a free upgrade available . This has not been communicated to retailers and you will not see any offers of free upgrades on our website . The new software will be released in May . |
So DO NOT purchase any copies of TTN3 unless you do not want to upgrade. Some web-sites (Global Positioning Systems for example) are still saying there will be a FREE upgrade for all purchases after 1st March. This is clearly not true.
The interesting part from the reply is "this has NOT been communicated to retailers" - Do they really mean 'NOT' - if so WHY NOT - presumably TT want retailers to continue sell TTN3 knowing full well that will not be prepared to offer any FREE upgardes. This sounds like sharp practice to me.

This has been commented on a few times recently. The problem is that when I chased support on details for upgrades that were going to be posted week before last (according to them) I got told " We will be releasing Navigator 5 in the comming months, however a final release date has not been set. "
It looks like they are going very vague all of a sudden, not sure what to read into it (if anything)

As far as I am aware TomTom have never said they would issue free upgrades to anyone. So you could argue that there is no need to let the retailers know. In fact I would be very suprised if they didnt know anyway. If I was a retailer the first question I would ask a distributor or the manufacturer would be "Are you offering free upgrades?" when ordering additional stock.
So you have to ask where the sharp practice is coming in.
On the other hand if we understand the way the upgrade will work correctly: if you buy TomTom 3 UK now you will have a chance to upgrade to TomTom 5 and also get the maps of Europe for a nominal sum which looks like it might be €59 judging by the price of the GO upgrade. _________________ Mike Barrett |

At least TomTom are now saying the new TTN5 software will be released in May. I hope there are right.
I have also noticed that the New Destinator PN software is listed on a couple of European web-sites at 139.00 euros. I am looking at both at the moment - not yet sure which way to jump.

It seems a bit tough on the retailers. If they still have copies of TTN3 in stock, it will be almost impossible to shift them. If TomTom agreed to a free upgrade for everyone who purchased after a certain date, more people might purchase TTN3 if they have an immediate need for GPS rather than looking elsewhere. Rather a dubious marketing decision

Actually it is not really that tough on the retailers, they knew well in advance about the end of life of the product ranges. This is how news of the new GOs leaked out. Not from an insider, but from a retailer who was given advance warning.
These retailers were then able to make up thier own minds what stock levels to order prior to the announcement of Version 5. _________________ Mike Barrett |

But historically Tomtom have offered users free upgrades if they bought the previous version within x months of the new one being released. I got a free TTN2->TTN3 upgrade like this (well, just the cost of the postage). |

Actually this could work in your favour, if retailers are desparate enough to shift TT3 stock you might be able to find substantial discounts. If you then buy a discounted copy, you can then upgrade to TT5 for about 50euros, this may well work out cheaper than buying TT5 outright! |

I e-mailed Global Positioning Systems to see if it was an offer they were doing ( to clear stock or something) or an offfer they thought TomTom were offering. Their response was "Nothing has been confirmed by any party so currently no offer is being made till further notice." The offer is still on the website

....which is interesting because if you bought TT3 with the express intention of the upgrade to TT5 and they refused to do it they would be not be in a tenable position from the legal standpoint. A statement such as that on a website would be deemed as an inducement to purchase under law. They would be wise to remove it. They're a good company and certainly wouldn't want to give the wrong impression. _________________ TomTom 720

I have just had another look at the Global Positioning Systems web-site and the statement about a free upgrade has now been removed.
As some people have said it might still be cheaper to purchase TTN3 and then upgrade to TTN5 than wait and purchase TTN5 when it is released. Depends on the price TomTom are going put on TTN5 |

It was removed shortly after I pointed out that it contradicted their statement that there was currently no offer :-)
supertrader.co.uk have £30 increase when bought as part of a package with an Ipaq 2410 (note I don't know the company, they just came up when I googled for TT5 pre-order!)
Also of note is they claim they will have TT5 / bluetooth GPS in stock 12th this month, could be a teaser or could be they have some firm dates......

What is the full link to the TomTom area at Supertrader.co.uk. All I get is a screen title halfprice.co.uk with a large directory of areas to choose. Thanks
