Hi,
Anyone out there got any experience of Vent mounts. The mount that came with my TT kit just does not hold the PDA securely in hot weather, must be something to do with the friction plate inside the holder. I have been looking at the magnetic "one click" version here.
Anyone got one of these or can recommend something else?
Regards,
Steve |

i used it for my phone but stopped using it as every time i took my phone away it was aways almost frozen from the air con , and doing that all the time can't be good for the appliance |

I use a vent mount clip with a compatible Bodit mount for my HP2210, and it really works well and looks great. I can highly recommend one of these high quality mounts. _________________ Ipaq 2210

Good point Dunno, I must say I have been using a window mount on one car, and a vent mount on my car without air conditioning. Has anyone used the magnetic mount though, does it secure the PDA sufficiently, how big is the plaate you stick on the back and does the magnetism cause problems.....?
The Brodit mounts look a bit expensive.

I use this vent mount in my Audi A4 with A/C. I made a holder for my Axim X3 from an aluminium case bought on E-Bay, I removed the front flap and ground off the hinges - much less bulky than most PDA holders. The stick-on magnet (3 x 2cm) sticks to the holder, not to the back of the Axim.
I've had no problems with magnetism though I only use my GPS on average a couple of times a week and of course the magnet isn't permanently fixed to the Axim.
It stays in place pretty well; it has only fallen off once but that was because the cable got wrapped round the gear stick - I have a Haicom 204S. I leave the quick release (the oval thing with the square 'loop' at one end) in place all the time as a holder for my phone when I'm not using GPS; the stick-on magnet fits in a similarly shaped cutout on the front of the quick release.
I've never had problems with cold air from the A/C affecting either Axim or phone. I thought is was excess heat that sometimes caused failure, I wouldn't have thought that air at a temperature comfortable for the driver should cause problems.
The complete kit included screen mount, two quick releases and four stick-on magnets so is quite versatile and, for £20, pretty good value. |

The only problem that can occur is producing condensation on the inside of the phone/PDA which could cause a short. _________________ Graham.

I hadn't thought of that, thanks Graham. I invariably have the vent to which the PDA mount is attached closed so I guss the risk is reduced (my wife reckons the air from the A/C dries out her skin...) |

Spook51,
How thick is the magnet?

Including the sticky pad it's 1.5mm; the 3M sticky pad is thicker than the magnet itself. |

Seems like a good option then.

kind of the opposite of my windscreen mount. Recently in the hot weather I put my PDA in and drove off. The PDA needed charging, so it was doing that, and then it popped up a dialog box saying ' the battery is getting too hot, so I've stopped charging for a bit'.
Very annoying while navigating, as you have to click a tiny 'OK' to make it go away.
It wasn't even that hot in the car. |

I wouldn't want to trust my baby with a magnet
I did have a vent mount but frankly it was sh**te, not rigid at all, my pda wobbled about all over the place, I know the suspension on my car is stiff but everytime I went over a manhole cover the whole assembly wobbled
I changed the vent mount (approx £6) for a smartclip (approx £15) which is absolutely superb -- it could be a part of the cars trim its that solid. I chose to put it over the centre air vents (the passengers can see whose talking )and have been using it for about a year -- no problems with the AC at all... _________________ Apple iPhone 5, Navigon, Brodit ProClip Mount |

I use a Brodit mount over the vent. Even when the air con is running at 16 degs C I don't think its a worry. Just not really cold enough, considering that in winter it can be below zero for quite some time before the heating kicks in.
The Brodit mount is rock solid. very impressed with these mounts. I have an Arkon mount for hire cars, when I go abroad, and these are not so solid. |

I've just completed a Somerset - North Wales - Somerset round trip using the magnetic vent mount with no problems at all. My Axim was held securely at all times, didn't wobble, wasn't affected by the heat or the A/C and TT3 directed us door to door with great precision. |
