More of a PC question than a TT one this...
Anyone know if it is possible to give your computer a better name than "Computer" when you connect via USB?
...So the TT would ask "Do you want to connect to "Andy's Computer?" or whatever, instead.
I know I'm being a bit anorak-y (or worse!), but it just niggles, especially as it isn't even grammatically correct |

If you think about it for a second, that's not going to work, because until its connected it doesn't know what the computer at the other end is called ! (Unless it connects, find outs what the PC is called, then disconnects, then asks you if you want to connect. Seems unlikely it does that :-)
You could try searching on the TT disk looking for the string 'do you want to connect' and then editing the name and/or phrase with a hex editor but keeping within the length of the phrase. As long as its not checksummed it would probably work. If it doesn't, you may be scr*w*d totally. Take a backup beforehand, or perhaps, don't bother trying! |

I don't think that would make any difference as TomTom does look in there anyway.
When you connect your TomTom to your PC it will flash up the "connect to your comuter" screen but the word 'computer' is actually contained within TomTom.
It's not reading the word 'computer' from your PC as in 'device name' it's a generic caption just like the turn on and turn off screens.
The only way to change the word 'computer' on that screen is to hack into the ROM and change the caption to whatever.

Darn I just knew I was typing this to slowly . . . |

Off topic a little...but, when I first got my 920T when I connected it to my computer I had the 2 red hands appear in the "devices and removable storage" folder, now it just says "920T Unit" and a picture of a removable hard drive. How do I get the little red hands to appear? |

This works with an external USB drice, so it should hopefully work for the TT.
In the root there is an autorun.inf containing
[autorun]
ICON=xxxxxx.ICO
where you have the Icon file (xxxxxx.ICO) in the root.
All you have to do is find the TomTom icon file! _________________ Jock

(How can I get out of this? I know! I did say 'Try', I didn't say it would work). _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Found the "autorun" file from my out of the box backup, copied it over to the root of tt, the icon file is there in the root but still no icon in my computer |

I wish!!!
(3 weeks to go before redundancy after 25 years with the same company... )
Anyway, I can confirm the autorun.inf icon line works... Gerry C and I have used it to make different icons show for the internal and external storage on a Go720. However, on some PCs, Windows sometimes does make a mess of things and not use the icon anyway.
Back to my question, are we sure its just a generic screen text? To me, the way it's written really implies it is getting the name somehow from the USB connection (a bit like you get when pairing with Bluetooth or when Windows recognises a new "plug and play" device that's been added).
If it was just a generic bit of text, wouldn't they have written something like "Do you want to connect to your computer" without putting one word in quotation marks? |

Andy, sorry to hear that - know how you feel. I also got the heave-ho after 25 years. Outsourced, but joined that company and 8 years later was insourced again. Now I have 42 years service.
Hope everything goes OK for you over the next few weeks and you get sorted with a new (better) position soon. _________________ Ric - TomTom 520 DEAD - Passed to the great traffic jam in the sky. Now using Maps & Waze on Samsung Galaxy S4 + CamerAlert of course! |

Chin up Andy, I am certain the greater loss is theirs.
Myself, sixteen years, then thirteen posts since '93 most of which went under or relocated. "Tell us a bit about your history" inevitability makes the interview panel smile (nervously).
PITA, but you get to meet some interesting people on the way. |

Andy, perhaps you should try for a job at TT support . Oh no, sorry, you understand TTs so you wouldn't qualify.
Good luck in your search anyway . _________________ TT Go Essential |
