Just noticed this new appear question on TomTom's support site.
Question
Until when can I upgrade my TomTom Navigator 2 maps?
Answer
This upgrade offer is valid until the 1st of December 2004
With the new platform already being launched on the new HP/TomTom packs (in what looks very cut down) and Navigator 2004 out in USA, could this mean that our next upgrade isn't far away? |

Not necessarily. TomTom only ever leave upgrade offers open for about six months - and Navigator 3 came out in late April / early May. It has been extended a bit because the Navigator 3 USA maps took so long to appear (initially TomTom weren't going to bother with Navigator 3 USA maps, but skip straight to a future version).
Further, the upgrade offer is only open from the immediately previous version.
Previously they've offered an update for their Pocket PC product every year, which comes out around April or May. It seems near certain that whatever replaces Navigator 3 will be based around TomTom's "common platform" NavCore engine - which all their products apart from Navigator for the Pocket PC now use. TomTom have said as much to some of the Pocket GPS team.
The HP Navigation Pack is, in many ways, work in progress towards that future Pocket PC version - it's NavCore based, but it lacks various features that are in Navigator 3 for the Pocket PC. I can't think many people will be happy if whatever replaces Navigator 3 has features missing!
Maybe, in the future, more frequent map updates will be possible - I believe TomTom have gone for a common map format on all "common platform" products. For now, though, we can only watch and wait - there is nothing public at this stage about future plans.
