I am going to by a new SD card for my TTG... however, I noticed that cards have different write speeds. Are all SD cards compatible with TTG? Can anyone recommend a particular make and a good web source for cards.
Many thanks |

Hi there,
I'm no technical expert, so when I upgraded (just last week) I went for a card that a lot of people said they had had no problems with, the Kingston 512Mb. Don't know it's full tech details, but it was something like £27.31 from www.dabs.com It was a straight 'plug and play'. No problems at all.
Upgrading is simple if you look through the forum, oldboy put me straight last week. All you need is the card, a read/writter is not needed, and 'reactivation' is also not needed.

Yes - I'd like some advice on this one as I'm about to upgrade SD Card. 2 questions:
1) Is write speed important? and if so can someone recommend a fast card.
2) If a 512 card is used to capacity does it slow the TTG down any more than a full 128 card?
Thanks |

Q1, I think that READ speed is more important than write speed, as the system needs to get the data from the card, but depending on the system most standard speed SD cards will work fine in a gps application.
If you have a fast system, and use it for playing Mp3 files, and also Mpeg movies then the faster SD cards than can read and write at 32x speed are better. The speed rating is compared to the MMC cards, a standard SD card is around 4x faster read and write.
Some systems may be supplied with MMC cards, but can use SD cards as well, the size is very similar, the SD card being a bit thicker, and also has another contact under the 45 deg corner.
Q2. No, it should not be any slower, this again depends on how much cache the system uses for data, the cache is loaded with the data from the card or memory storage so that its available for using the fastest possible way by the system. |

I am actually putting the finishing touches to a review article that has been in preparation for about 4 months now regarding memory cards. Hopefully this will be published this weekend.
The first thing I would say is that you can pretty much ignore both read and write speeds. This is because when they are quoted they rely on serial reading or writing of large amounts of data to achieve the quoted rates. Applications like TomTom Navigator are continually reading random sections of the file. More details in the review.
Without wanting to preempt the review you will not go far wrong with a Kingston 512Mb card. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Am I save to assume that any software or map update that TT release will fit onto the standard 128mb card? If so, whats the point of getting anything bigger than a 256mb which should hold all the POI one could ever need given that I will never need anything other than the GB map. Am I missing something? _________________ Life's a bitch... then I met Jane... |

My thoughts exactly. I was looking at the 1Gb SD card, then I thought: Do I really need all that? I've just downloaded all the postcodes, and I can see that all of them are about 50Mb. This, combined with all the other POI's I could ever need, I can't see it going much beyond 200Mb - ever! I think a 512Mb card is perfectly acceptable, and they're only 25 quid from www.scan.co.uk. |

The 512Mb is a good size and performs well. They are not expensive and allow for expansion in the future if you ever need it.
The review will be released this weekend. Hopefully, time dependent etc. _________________ Mike Barrett |
