Hi westentertainer,
Did you buy the iPAQ 1710 and install TTNav separately, or did you buy the “TomTom Navigation System with HP iPAQ 1710” bundle?
If you bought the bundle, then you have the new version of TomTom, which doesn’t have a compass. You can see the review here.
You can read comments about the review and the new version of TomTom here.

Hi westentertainer,
If you do have TomTom Navigator 3 then the compass can be switched on via:
Navigator Screen:
Navigator Menu | More | More | Properties | Navigation | tick “Display compass on map”
Map Screen:
File | Properties | Navigation | tick “Display compass on map”

Hi ,
Unfortunately, that’s correct, it looks like you cannot display the compass in the version of TomTom Navigator that you are running.
Have a read of the review here. It will hopefully show the differences between TomTom Navigator 3 and TomTom Navigator 2004 / HP TomTom Navigation bundle.

Hi Tony,
In TTNav 3, in the Navigator Screen, tap the road display part of the screen and you will get a set of menus, which cycle around by tapping the “more” button (a triangle). You should have something similar.
I think that the menus are called “Preferences” for your TomTom. Hopefully one of the icons will be labelled “Properties”.
