Hi,
I'm about to take a plunge and buy a pocket pc system. I've decided on HP IPAQ 4150 with a bluetooth receiver, CoPilot Live 5 or TomTom Navigator 3. I've read both reviews and have been reading through the forum but can't decide which software to choose
Perhaps I'll tell you what I need it for and would be grateful if anyone could give me some advice.
I am going to work as a chauffeur , driving 12 hour shifts around London and the South-East, so don't mind spending pounds and getting a good system. The speed of calculating routes and rerouting also accuracy would be essential. Traffic updates would be great, but from what I have read this feature is at early stages with both manufacturers. The amount of detail and the clarity of TomTom maps seems to be greater than CoPilot's. But CoPilot seems to be a more integrated package (with Speed Camera database and free live traffic updates). Also the future release of Eastern Europe maps on NAVTEQ (CoPilot) sounds attractive - I'm Polish and travel to Poland every now and then.
Any suggestions
Cheers,
Pawel |

TomTom knows the congestion zone, CoPilot has the better maps. TomTom behaves like a pig (it usurps the BT stack) and CoPilot doesn't completely install to storage card (always puts the sound files to the \windows directory)
If you have the budget, I would recommend you buy both programs... You can then sell one of them again if you finally found your favourite. _________________ Lutz

Does CoPilot just warn about the zone or can it actively avoid it? _________________ Lutz

I haven't actually tested it, but the manual claims that after a warning it will give you the option to route around the area. However, as I have my options set for quickest rather than shortest routing CoPilot will tend to avoid London altogether unless the destination is actually within London. _________________ Kam |

In what way are they better? Are they more accurate or more recently updated?

Hmm... I'm lost here, could you explain in newbie terms?
Thanks for your replies, by the way. |

CoPilot maps are newer, and they use NAVTEQ as the map provider (TomTom uses TeleAtlas). You guys on the island seem to think that NAVTEQ maps are more detailed over there.
The usurpation thingie - TomTom takes the freedom to replace a critical Bluetooth file with its own creation, blocking other programs from using Bluetooth GPS receivers, even when TomTom is not running. Since this shameless behaviour is limited to TomTom GPS drivers starting with 2.08 you can fix that by reverting to 2.07 _________________ Lutz

I settled for the 2210 rather than a dedicated unit so I can switch sftware in the future if I wanted.. A bluetooth GPS gives me the mobility I wanted. However, the decider was the software. TT3 is an excellant product, its too popular to be otherwise, but CP5 just seemed to offer more now and in the future. I wasn't too concerned over TT3's , arguably, better graphics as I only listen to the voice on the move and only stop and look at the map if its not clear where to go. This has only occured on back country lanes where junction right of way etc is none to clear in any case. If I do stop I just look at the 2D anyway.
Personaly I don't see the point of 3D, I understand the point , I just don't get it. If it does matter then I guess TT3 is marginally better but as I say give me 2D anyday. Particularly in London.
Just to confuse the whole case as I have recently gone through the pain of being a newbie, still am I supose, both will work well, one, TT3, is £35 cheaper than the other. Everything else is subjective and subject to budget. For my two pennyworth I'd rather have better maps that are in CP5 |

On the Pocket PC:
Start > Settings > System > Remove Programs
There you need to remove TomTom GPS and/or TomTom~GPS
Do a soft reset before and after this
Then download 2.07 from our downloads section, and install it from the PC.
Then go back into Start > Settings > System > GPS and confirm that the version says 2.07 _________________ Lutz

Lutz,
Thanks for your help.
I note that you suggest trying both Copilot5 and tt3, and then deciding what is best.
Can one install both these programs on the same ipaq?
I have bought and installed TT3, and would like to try the cp5.
Thanks and regards |
