|
|
I have just obtained a comprehensive set of POI files in Garmin gpi format and want them to convert them to OV2 to use on my tomtom. There seem to be a lot of converters on-line, but has anyone got a good suggestion for a simple one to use, please? _________________ Gee-Pee

I've used http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/poi_manager.php before, but would have preferred a stand-alone utility really, rather than an on-line converter. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Gee-Pee, i think i have used GpsBabel for something like this. It is stand alone and worked well.
There are two versions; command line & with a Windows User Interface. The one with a UI is much easier to use unless you are used to computer speak.
EDIT - The link is http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html Their web-page doesn't mention .ov2 which is strange because I wouldn't have used it for anything else. I'm not at my other PC at the moment so can't confirm. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Thanks Andy. That one I tried to use to convert the file that I have in Garmin format, but I must be doing somemthing wrong as nothing appears to happen when I load an unzipped file containing the gpi file. The file in question is a full list of all Croatian campsites called 'kampoviHR.gpi'
SeeHere
I then hoped to use POIEdit from Dnote recommended by Mike to finish it off and load it on to my TT.
Will try one of the other suggestions. _________________ Gee-Pee

Thanks, I did have a look at that one last night, but like you I could not find any mention of 0V2 - maybe another look. _________________ Gee-Pee

[quote="exportman"]You could also use TYRE
http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/index.php
Yes, I have used TYRE before, but I don't think? that it does what I want. It is a great piece of software and recently updated to a new Beta version, but unless you know differently, then I will have to find something else. Thanks [/i] _________________ Gee-Pee

Hi Gee-Pee, I've just fired up my Win PC and YES, GpsBabel does recognise .ov2 files.
Hope it works for you. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Hi Gee-Pee, I have just tried to convert CamerAlert .csv files to .ov2 using GpsBabel. The resulting .ov2 file, when opened with TYRE, placed me in Ghana and all on the Grenwhich Meridian. Perhaps some refinement is needed prior to conversion.
Please let me know if you have more sucess. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

AFAIK, Tyre does not work with gpi format. (Nor does my other usual favourite POIEdit).
I would have recommended them myself if they did!

We're not doing very well here!
When I click on that link I just get a blank white page with "The service is unavailable", so I can't try anything yet. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

In reply to a different post on this site, Lutz/Ibendlin has suggested that I use GPSVisualizer.com for a similar project. I shall not have a chance to try this 'til later but thought that it may help you. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Just tried the link myself and it works for me at the moment. But, you are right, we are not doing too well with this one. I have tried all the suggestions so far except for the GPS Visualizer one. Must search that out and see what that is. It's now a question of not being beaten rather than a need _________________ Gee-Pee

Have given Lutz' GPS Visualizer a go, but that is not suitable either. Will kee searching. Have also gone back to the source, Croatian Camping Union and asked for help. They have acknowlodged, but I think the answer will be no. _________________ Gee-Pee

Have tried this one again and, in theory, have converted the gpi file to OV2...at least that is what the site tells me. However, if I try to open it in POIEdit, it tells me that the file is corrupt and cannot be opened. Got all excited, temporarily. _________________ Gee-Pee
