|
|
Hi All,
I am new here.
I had a Tomtom One IQ routes, brilliant but it died, so I got a XL IQ routes last week.
A new application was suggested on home but when I installed it the camera alerts wasn't there.
I called Tomtom and they said that function is no longer available - legal issues. Unbelievable!!! For the record, I am not a speedster, I just like the added safety of knowing where the cameras are.
The question is... does anyone know how to get the old application back? And how to set up a custom warning tone once it is back?, this feature seems to have vanished too. I don't like Tomtom so much any more, the XL is nowhere near as good as the One was.
Thanks |

Does the box say XL IQ 2 (the number 2 is rather small) - And what country are you posting from, the information from TomTom seems rather strange to claim the device doesn't do what you want (they have been wrong before though) - Mike |

I don't disbelieve that's what you were told, but I find it very hard to believe that's really happened!
I'm sure we would have heard about it from other sources (and TomTom themselves by a more direct route) by now.
Also... I have just checked on Home and I can still download camera data from them for my Go940, so they *are* still available for other models which makes it unlikely they have been withdrawn for legal reasons. (nolimits is posting from a UK IP address, Mike...)
Basically, I reckon the customer services person is talking rubbish.
but what I think they might have been referring to are camera data for one particular country? (Such as Switzerland, where having the data on a satnav *is* illegal).
Now... Having said all that... Wouldn't you prefer the much more accurate data from this site? The TomTom-supplied camera data is notoriously inaccurate and out of date.
Wouldn't you also prefer to have SPOKEN warnings, telling you the speed limit in force as you approach a camera, rather then some unhelpful "bong" noise?
All this is available with the PGPSW camera database. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Also....
Can you tell us exactly what software version you now have on the device?
You can find out by one of two methods:
1. If they are there on your model, tap the signal strength bars on the bottom bar of the main screen and then tap the small box that says "version" on the next screen. That should give you a full page of text - give us the details it has on the second line.
2. If it exists, select "Status and information" then "Version information" in the main or preferences menu, and that should take you to the same page of information. Again, tell us what's on the second line. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Apparently France AND NOW Germany are also outlawing GPS speedcam warnings too! |

Thanks for all your replies.
Here are the answers to some of your questions...
I am in the UK.
The box does say XL IQ 2
I couldn't find the version screen - it was on the old One.
But I found the following via Home...
ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=9151
ApplicationVersion=605385.2
Does that help??? |

Not strictly true.... Lots of discussion on this in other topics (eg here, where Darren says:
Quote: | As for the situation in Germany it is far from clear. The use of GPS warning POIs is not illegal under German Federal law, it has been forbidden in some Landé (counties) but this only carries weight if it is backed by Federal legislation.
Many manufacturers and services continue to offer data in Germany which suggests that it is being largely ignored. |
and Roadrunner reports:
Road_Runner wrote: | Latest: From today's 'Le Monde' website.
Significantly, the government is now in discussion with the manufacturers of radar warning devices to see if they can be used as aids to road safety, such as warning of debris on the road; the idea is to share information about road conditions with other road users, to use equipment like this in an intelligent way, and put an end to 'blind punishment'. The idea of banning radar warning devices looks like being binned permanently, as being too repressive. |
But maybe that topic is a better place to discuss that aspect, and we should stick to 'nolimits' particular issue here. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Also, just as an aside there seems to be a load of funstions that have been dropped, eg.
I can't enter a loaction by latitude and longitude on this XL2.
I can't find the version information screen.
Setting a sound for the camera warnings (a camera shutter) was not possible even before the so-called "upgrade",
I am discovering more all the time.
Might just return it and buy a Garmin instead - any thoughts on this? |

I think you would be best to follow Andy_P's advice and download the PGPSW speed camera database with spoken warnings; you can't beat it, and as we all know, the TomTom database is wildly inaccurate. |

Yes, I am considering that. That is how I got to this site.
Actually, the Tomtom one has been sufficient for me, so I would like to get it back if I can.
The other issue as I also wrote is the number of missing functions.
Can anyone help with reverting to the previous application version??? |

I have just found the version...
App 9.151.605385.2, OS541764
I also find it strange that Tomtom would discontinue the camera warnings - that must account for a significant portion of thier business. |

The XL IQ ˛ is a dumbed down entry level version for people who haven't experienced a TomTom before and have no idea what they are missing. It's missing all sorts of functionality which you had previously and generally speaking, the only satisfactory way to get most of them back is a different model - e.g. a refurb X50. _________________ Dennis

ok, I was leaning towards returning it.
Cananyone suggest a decent model?
I don't need the Live services, but having them would be ok.
Also I like the circular mount, easyport. |

Recommendations are always very personal. As a rough guide, I'd say anything which does NOT have an SD card slot is a poor idea.
TBH, a refurbished X20 (no Live services) sounds like the ideal thing for you as an upgrade for your One, but you won't find one anywhere. I'd go for a refurbished X50. Depending on where you get it, you can get them with a year's free Live services so you could give that a try - TT cameras are rubbish, but Google Search and HD Traffic are very good and (to me) well worth the annual subscription. Some vendors (not TomTom) also have them with Latest Map Guarantee too. Doesn't have the easyport mount. _________________ Dennis

I'm still downloading TT safety cameras, both premium and standard versions. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]
