OK, I must apologise, as my post was in reply to your second post where you were saying you thought the unit is not fit for purpose because a large map won't fit on it, and I stand by my response to that, it is up to the purchaser to determine if the goods do what he wants or needs them to do before buying them.

However, I missed the point in your first post that Home had allowed you to purchase and download the wrong map.

The one glaring error on TomTom's part is that Home allowed that.

Others have mentioned the website.
When you go to the "mapshop" on the TT website you cannot enter "Start2 Europe" or "Start2 Regional" as the model, so the recommendations for maps will cover both variants.

But there is then a clear statement saying:
Quote:
IMPORTANT: Some versions of this device have limited internal memory. Before purchasing a map that may be too big, either use the device serial number checker (the box to the right) or connect your device to TomTom HOME to check how much memory you have available.

Was there no warning AT ALL in Home, when you attempted to buy the map?

TomTom support have contacted me today, and said that the error code indicates a problem with the download, and have suggested removing it and downloading again. There was no mention at all in HOME of the map being too big for the unit when I purchased it, and the advisor from TomTom support does not seem to be aware of this either.

To confuse matters further, following yesterdays discussions I have just checked the capacity of the unit, and according to my computer it has 1.84 GB of space remaining. Does that not mean that the unit does indeed have a total of 2GB capacity, and should be able to accomodate a 1.5 GB map of the US?

It would seem to indicate you have 2 Gb.

Well if it is UK&RoI it should have less than that. If there is 1.84gb free, where is the map supplied with the unit? Could you go to manage my device in Home and see what is on your TT?

I have just removed all maps, and attempted to download again as instructed by TT support. Took several hours, and just left me where I started with UK and ROI maps loaded, but an error message for the US maps.

According to Manage my Device on TTHome, the device has 1885.8MB of memory. Installed items account for 304.6MB, which includes the reinstalled UK and ROI maps. This leaves 1581.2MB of free space. The US map is 1549.2 MB, so should fit on, especially if I take off the UK & ROI maps which account for 213.7 MB. So I do not understand what is going on here, and the error message I get seems related to a problem with the download, not a lack of space on the unit.

1885.8 x 1024 = 1.9 Gb

So if I have 1.9 GB of memory, that should be enough to add the US map, which is supposedly 1.5GB?

Just to make sure, are you using a cable to connect to the internet? For some reason, map downloads do not like WiFi.

Btw - Welcome to the TomTom world! Shocked

Have tried both Wifi and cable, and two different computers. Latest email from TT support says that my question has been passed onto a supervisor, i.e. they don't know what the problem is.

Wifi works fine for me. Not sure why it should make any difference though.

Can you tell us the exact name of the model you bought (off the box) and the fist two characters of the serial number (next to the barcode on the bottom label)?

The other number on the bottom label (something like 4EE0.001.00 or similar) would be handy too.

Thanks.

From the box, the model name is TOMTOM Start2 United Kindom . Republic of Ireland. The numbers under the barcode are S/N:XM4270K0xxxx and 8EY0.013.10

I plugged the first two digits of your serial number into TomTom's "What model have I got" box on their mapshop page, and sure enough it says you have a 2GB storage, which does seem very odd for a UK+IRL only device.

But it does mean you can definitely fit one of the cut-down Europe maps onto it. So keep up the pressure on customer support. Smile

I suppose they could have run out of devices with 1gb memory at some point and just stuck a UK&RoI map on a 2 gb device? I'm sure that would not eat into their profits too much. Just another TT foible? Confused
