I have a number of files with an extention of *.chk in the root folder of my Go 720
What are they used for and is they any rubbish files that can be safely deleted from TomTom such as *.tmp in Windows |

I only have one in my root folder called data.chk but it is quite large at nearly 4 mb. Windows explorer does say it is recovered file fragments so I will await the responses from others who will know if it can be deleted or when I get time do an experiment to find out myself with a back up and subsequent deletion to see what happens. |

Hi
.chk files on Tomtom are different to Windows .chk files. The Tomtom runs with Linux operating system,so be careful when deleting files from Tomtom.

I believe they are something to do with the voice files.
I read something about them a while back - either here or on another site - I think the poster was advised to leave them alone, or say exactly what version of TT they were using and someone would send the correct .chk files for their version. _________________ Triumph Tbird 1700. data.chk is all the built in sound effects
dataxx.chk where xx is a number are all the individual voice files for recorded voices such as Jane (she's data05.chk if I remember correctly)
BEWARE! This is a good example of how Windows mis-reports the meaning of files intended for other purposes/operating systems that just happen to have a similar three letter extension as something Windows *does* understand. |

If you have backups of your Tom Tom on your computer be very careful when using proprietory 'clean up' utilities (Clean Up, Crap Cleaner and System Mechanic being three examples) as it will delete the .chk files from your backups and make them almost useless.
Go into the options for your clean up utility and untick or remove the option to delete those files before you run it. |
