|
|
Hi,
I am travelling to the US in a few weeks time and am planning on taking my TomTom 910 with me. My question is: will it automatically switch to using the US map when I get there and switch it on or do I need to tell it to do this somehow? The US map is installed on the hard drive, just as it was when I bought it.
Thanks,
Phil. |

Hi,
On arrival, once a GPS fix is established, the 910 should prompt you to ask if you would like to change to 'North America map' or something similar.
If not, its only a few screen presses to get to the change map option _________________ Tomtom GO 1005 LIVE

If it doesn't offer to switch maps automatically simply press Change Preferences/ Manage Maps/ Switch Maps then select the USA (North America) map from the list - Try doing this before your trip just to make sure the map works prior to the trip - Mike |

Thanks for the prompt responses. Good advice re checking the map first - just done so and it seems to work fine so hopefully I'm all set. I had actually never noticed the option in Preferences - doh! |

While you have the US map set, why not do an update so you'll get any mapshare updates that are there... |

Good suggestion! And also, if you subscribe to the PGPSW cameras, you can update them too! _________________ Tomtom GO 1005 LIVE

Two more tips: First, when you get in the car, it may take a short while to get a fix. The quickGPSFix may help, but switching continents may add a little delay. But, before you get going, add a favourite which is your current position. This will help you find your way back to the car hire place later! Only slight issue is that when you navigate back it will probably say "no route found" because you aren't on a road. So just locate the favourite on the map, select a road, and navigate there. You'll be close enough to find the entrance on the block.
The other thing I found very handy was to use Google Maps in satellite view to locate the actual entrances to parks etc. You can then locate the same place on the TomTom and set them as favourites. Some of the POIs for the likes of Disney are the park centre, and you can't get there! You could end up on the wrong road. (That said, for such large sites the road signs will take over by the time you get close). |

Another useful option is to prompt you to drive on the right when in countries which do so. It will do this (a sound and a flashing text warning at the top of the screen) when you first plan a route and also after is senses you've been stationary for any length of time.
I drive abroad a lot and it seems like second nature to be on the right but last year I still managed to pull out of a car park and set off on the left! A car in the distance made me correct it sharpish but it might have been different had that car been closer.
I think the option is in planning preferences but I don't have my Tom Tom here to check. _________________ Tom Tom GO 720
