In Europe, the EGNOS is the system sending correction data from geostationary satellites to improve the accuracy of the position you're device is capable of detecting.
This is done with a network of ground station receiving all the available GPS signals at those locations and with the knowledge of the exact antenna position of each ground station, which must be know with the accuracy of centimeters, the errors are calculated. That data of all the ground stations is sent to a central computer calculating the signal errors and the like of the GPS satellites in combination with all other stations, builds some kind of error map with that, which in turn is sent up to the three satellites available which you are able to receive in Europe.
If you look at the GPS screen of your Garmin unit, you should notice that it might receive signals from satellites with numbers bigger that 32, namely the following three are available to cover the European region:
AOR-E PRN 120 is Garmin ID 33
ARTEMIS PRN 124 is Garmin ID 37
IOR-W PRN 126 is Garmin ID 39
At the moment, 33 and 39 should be available, if you've got a clear view to the geostationary satellites above the equator.
The User Support page of EGNOS is located at http://asqf-gnss.com/mambo/index.php, click on SIS Schedule to see the current operation details.
WAAS is a very similar and compatible system for the US region.
Does that explain it?

Thanks BeatO...thats as clear an explanation as I ever got. Very helpful indeed. Based on that information, I'll keep it switched on.
Cheers mate. |

Due to the low angle of the signal (around 23deg to the due south here in UK) the signal levels will be low and quite often hidden by the topography of the land / vehicle. However it does no harm to your system to enable the facility. _________________ Phil |

I believe that use of WAAS/EGNOS increases battery consumption. |

I have seen that with respect to my Garmin GPS60 handheld. I haven't seen it quantified anywhere though. I guess there is more processing to do and maybe a bit more drain in the pre-amp stage boosting the weaker signal? Not a problem with in-car equipment where power is readily available. _________________ Phil |

Hi. I'm new to dedicated satnavs (although not GPS in general) and have just bought a Nuvi 300. I'm getting satellite 33 with a solid bar. Does that mean that the EGNOS data is actually being used? I've heard that on other Garmins, a 'D' appears in the bar for each satellite if the EGNOS data is being applied to it.
