PLEASE post TTs response if/when they finally reply |

It will probably say:
Quote: | Dear Mr xxxx
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.
Map updates are available for purchase from our website, they however are not available free of charge.
On the TomTom, website www.tomntom.com, you can find information on how TomTom acquires its map data. We work with two suppliers etc. etc. |
I think we've ALL had one of those |

Both Navteq and Teleatlas maps can be made to work on the TT700, (and therefore probably the others) but it involves procedures which are not allowed to be discussed because - not to beat about the bush - they are in breach of the TT license terms & conditions.
All attempts to try and prevent this have failed, as all it takes is a reformat/reinstall of an illegal backup to make the illegal version work again. This work was done for a client who provided his drivers with TT700's only to find that most had been "modified" in some way within a few months. He now has a further problem in that the "union" is preventing him from making such behaviour a disciplinary action as it was not in the original "terms of employment", and they won't accept new "terms" unless they recieve a substantial cash bonus !!!! They have also threatened industrial action if he removes the TT700's. Seems he is betwixt a rock and a hard place, he either ignores (condones ?) illegal software (can he be sued/prosecuted ??) or has industrial action thrust on him ...
[anyhow.. back on topic..]
As far as I know, from the legitimate point of view, Tim Buxton's comments are 100% accurate :

The 'Union' hasn't a leg to stand on. If the employer does not take action then he is leaving himself open to problems. Terms of Employment have nothing whatsoever to do with this issue. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks, I have passed this information on by telephone this morning. I know nothing about the "Union" side of things. I just make and mend the clients computers!! I have now been informed that it may just be "posturing" by a vociferous minority as when my client approached the Union office, bypassing the local shop-stewards he got a different answer !! Looks like I may have a small job to return 15 TT700's to their original state + clients POI's - the joy and wonder of CD backups

And I apologise if that sounded like a lecture, not my intention at all. I run a small IT business and no terms of employment can counteract an employer and employees legal obligations. Any union member that claims otherwise is talking BS _________________ Darren Griffin |
