I am wanting to create a poi file for company branch locations but I don't want to run the usual crop of windows programs because I want the program to run automatically on our mainframe
Has anybody written a program to create an ov2 file from scratch I don't mind what language it is written in I just want to see how it is done!

this depends on the number of POIs you are talking about

The simple file is just a list of Type 02 records. It will work ok if you have 100 POIs or less.

If you have thousands of POIs (like we have with the speedcam database) you need to implement the complex version with 01 skipper type records for indexing (think of it as a Red-Black tree).

This algorithm is proprietary, and although we have created our own version (in PHP) TomTom will probably not want us to share it. (And I can't even guarantee it will work in all cases).

The DOS (not Windows) program makeOV2 is still your best bet.

The SDK document shows the ov2 record types, but not exactly how to use them. http://www.tomtom.com/support/ce/downloads/ttnavsdk_manual.pdf

The type 1 "index" or skipper records are quite tricky - many POI conversion programs do not even write them (making these ov2 files very inefficient).

The best description of the use of Type 1 records is a series of nested rectangles, starting with the biggest (which encompasses all the records in the file) down to the smallest (with only several records each).
