How can it crash 10 times in a row in EXACTLY the same place of the install. But then when I change CD drives it work first time. Its the same PC!!!!
How can software 'installation' be that processor intensive anyway.. Sure, it may be 'uncompressing' but my PC is constantly RARing, ZIPing and compressing in general for hours (if not days) on end and it never does this.
This may be an overheating problem for YOU, but it doesn't mean that it will explain this problem once and for all!!
Time to eat humble pie It looks like it IS heat related!!
My PC has been stable for years.. I run it 24 hours a day and its stable... But a few nights ago, I made a Photo CD (Which is effectivly a VCD video).
I left it running over night and when I came down in the morning, the PC was in the same state as it was when I installed TT maps..
I ran it again and the same thing happened.. This time I watched the CPU temps.. It started at 52 degrees and then built to about 63 and then shut off.
The CPU should work at this kind of temperature, but as I understand it, on some CPUs/Motherboards there is a thermister under the chip, so the temp reading is not actally on the chip. So in my case, it may have been hotter than 62 degrees.
So I tried again with the case off and a desk fan blowing into the PC and the temp never got about 47 degrees.
Quite why its overheating so quickly is something I will have to look at.. My CPU cooler is certainly man enough, but its clogged wtih dust, which I am hoping is the problem.
Anyway, thanks for the replies.. Sorry that I doubted you...
I still don't understand why it worked when I installed from my other CD drive, but clearly i need to focus my efforts on cooling, rather than worry about that.
If anyone else sees this, then as othes have pointed out, check the CPU temp.
