|
|
Hey,
I got my Garmin Nuvi 310D in October '06 with UK mapping; around the 14th October I uploaded the speed camera database to it.
My questions are.....
How do I know if there is a new map available - by this I mean the actual sat nav road maps (not speed camera map), to include new roads and such built since the last map on the unit.
Where can I get such maps from, PGPSW or Garmin?
How do I install a new map, does it just overwrite current one, adding any new roads. Will it wipe my speed camera database POI's off?
Thanks is advance for any help |

version 9 of the maps came out a couple of months ago and, from memory, cost about £45.
it is advisable to take a complete back up of your system before installing new maps but putting new maps on shouldn't affect any custom poi's or favourites already on your unit. but i would check with someone who has updated there maps first ;)

Thanks for the reply MaFt.
I assume you can only get these through the Garmin website? - I see they have version 9 on there.
What is the difference between City Navigator and City Navigator NT?
My current map is "City Navigator Europe NT+ v.8" (with UK & Ireland installed) so I would assume I need to buy the "NT" version for my unit.
But how do I back up the system thats already on my unit, and how do I install the new maps, can I install with the POI loader software program that I put the camera database on with or do I need something else?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm a bit of a newbie with regards to updating and changing stuff on my unit. |

The NT version has better file compression than City Navigator.. I have both versions on my Nuvi and Streetpilot 111 they are not compatable as fas as I know.

Once you have registered your unit, Garmin will select the correct upgrade DVD for you.
There are plenty of threads on here about how to back up your Nuvi.
Once you insert the DVD into your PC, you select "Upgrade Nuvi" and it will lead through the install - it will install MapSource on your PC to register the new maps (which may or may not be chargeable, depending what date you registered your Nuvi).
It will then directly copy a special version of the v9 maps to your Nuvi.
As part of this process, the DVD may also upgrade the firmware within your unit if needed (there are minimum version numbers required for v9 support). _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

the best way to back up the unit is to make sure that in windows you have hidden files and folders shown (in any folder: Tools / Folder Options... / View / Hidden files and folders / Show hidden files and folders)
and then just copy all the files and folders from the nuvi when it is connected to the pc. you can access the files through 'my computer' as it connects as a removable device.
and yes, you need the same maps (i.e. NT version) as what is already on. however, i believe when you buy the new maps you will be able to use the full european maps and not just the uk ones. you will probably need a new sd card though if you install full european mapping.
this guide may help in terms of how you would install the new maps: http://www.MaFt.co.uk/garmin/load_maps.pdf
