Hello,
I have an iPaq with Haicom CF GPS and 128Mb SD card for the maps. I'm running TTNav2 (France). Unfortunately, the complete map of France requires 205Mb so I have decided to get more memory. But which way to jump? The way I see it I have 2 choices: (a) buy 256Mb SD card (b) buy 256Mb CF card AND a double CF sleeve AND try and sell my current CF sleeve. At first glance (a) is simpler and cheaper than (b). But I'm worried about the speed differences of the 2 card types. Supposedly CF is much faster than SD cards. Does anyone have any imperical data for tomtom. eg: Has anyone tried calculating the same route on the 2 card types? Any hints?
TIA,
Stephen |

Stephen,
It depends who you talk to which technology is faster. I suspect that they realy are much of a muchness, and the main diffefences may be in the drivers.
There was an issue with iPaqs whereby a release of the firmware made the SD cards slow, but the CF cards still ran at the same speed.
My preference would be to stick with SD, smaller and easier to use. That is my own preference though. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Mike,
It would suit me just as well to stick with SD cards as its the tried and tested solution to date. Also, I can use CF cards to prepare other maps in adance and just copy them to the SD card when needed.
BTW, there is a very intersesting discussion in the Tomtom Navigator 2 forum (Route Calculation Time....) were people are comparing route calculation times from Lands End to John O'Groats. I'm just waiting to see a similar machines with different card types...
Cheers,

The better thing to do is use dedicated benchmarking software, really. I've got Pocket PC Mark on my iPAQ 3970.
My understanding is that if you choose decent cards from decent brands, CompactFlash tends to perform better than a SecureDigital memory. However, most people (myself included) prefer to keep their CompactFlash slot free for add-ons such as network cards, and hence use SD memory.
I would give you benchmarks of both SD cards and CF cards - but I haven't any CF memory cards to hand to benchmark!
