|
|
I am thinking of buying a Mio with navigation for use in motorhome and then with M-M for hill walking.
Is it the best around for this would you say?
What is the battery life like on the hills?
What size cards will do the job?
Is the screen OK in bright sunlight?
Anything else I should consider as a complete novice to GPS?
Best wishes

ok i will try and give you some advise
The Mio 168 is very popular as a GPS unit as the GPS is intergrated they sell very fast. I would say the major down fall is it does not have bluetooth so you cannot pair with a bt phone to get traffic updates etc (this is not essential). Battery life can be a few hours down to about 1 hour depending on what you are doing and the power saving features etc. The PDA will only take up to 1 GB card but i recommend somthing a bit smaller, if you go for 1GB make sure its a fast card. Like most PDA's the screen can be hard to see in direct sunlight, the glare can be bad at times.
It is a good entry level GPS system. _________________ Regards

I use both a Mio168 & Medion 95000 (rebranded Mio168), they are good units which I have had for nearly a year, both have been trouble free and work very well with both Navigon & TomTom gps software.
I note that Steven says you can only use up to a 1 Gb card, I use a 1 GB card in both unit but have tried a 2 GB card and it worked just fine, I even loaded all the different gps software I have got on to it, Navigon 4.2, Navigon 5.1, TomTom 3 & TomTom 5 and all worked just fine, the card is out of my digi camera so has been reformatted and out back there.
With the screen set to a low light level I find that the battery will last for about 3.5 hours before it starts complaining, but I always use Silversheild car speaker setup that charges the unit as well these days.
I would not recommend the cheap route, there will be no backup, no updating, no help, no nothing, but that's just my two pence worth. |

Mio, or any integrated PPC/GPS is good choice for both ca.hiking use.
It is not a good chice if you only use it for car.
Add an external antenna for car use and it should be perfect. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Try using the Display off utility found at http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/displayoff.shtml it extended battery life by at least 25% and works with all programs EXCEPT Tomtom.

I must admit that this was tried on the Medion 95000 and not the Mitac 168, and although they both run Window Mobile 2003 the Medion version is different to the Mitac version. The Medion has a My Flash DisK that the Mitac does not, the Medion has an inbeded sat icon on the bottom bar that can turn the gps on or off, and several other items, so it may be different to the Mitac 168 for some things, from the Medion specs sheet that came with the unit:
Quote: | Expansion Slot - SD/MMC Cards (recommended max 2GB), SDIO compatible |
Perhaps I was just lucky that it worked, the card is a PEAK 2GB Ultra 66x SD that I bought for my digi camera (cheap £94 icl p&p), but now have it back in the camera, and the web site I bought this from has now gone ? Perhaps they were to cheap, but the card works fine in the camera as well. |
